Fixing A Hole In Your Drywall
Chances are pretty high that you will some day
have to repair a hole in sheetrock. You can either call a quality painter
to come fix it or you can repair your drywall yourself. This article will
let you know how to fix it.
Clean Up the Repair Area
To prep the repair area you need to first
clean up the hole. If the paper on the back of the drywall is torn, you
need to cut that out. Cut it into an even square if possible.
Attach Support
You need to have something to attach the new
piece of drywall to. Insert a couple of boards into the hole and attach it
to the old sheetrock with screws.
Attach The New Drywall
Cut a piece of drywall to the correct size and
place it into the hole. Screw the drywall into the boards that you
attached to the backside of the hole.
Tape The Repair
You need to tape the drywall joints to keep
the repair from cracking. Apply a layer of drywall compound or mud to the
repair and then apply the drywall tape to the edges of the repair. Use a
drywall knife to smooth it out. Let the mud dry per manufacturers specs.
Because drywall compound will shrink, you may need to apply more than one
coat to the repair area.
Sand The Repair
Sand the Repair area with medium grit
sandpaper to smooth it into the surrounding area. Reapply drywall compound
if necessary.
Texture And Paint
If the wall has a texture on it, reapply it.
You can buy aerosol cans of texture at most home improvement stores. They
make small texturing jobs easy. Let the wall dry as long as the directions
on the texture say to. Paint the repaired area and you are done.
